Synthpop (short for synthesizer pop) is a genre of new wave music that became prominent in the 1980s, in which the synthesizer is the dominant instrument. It was especially associated with pop music. Synthpop primarily uses synthesizers, drum machines and complementary electric guitar licks. Early synthpop uses typical rock instrumentation (drums, guitar, bass), coupled with analog synthesizers or electronic keyboards.

According to Wikipedia, synthpop is sometimes deployed interchangeably with "electropop", but "electropop" may also denote a variant of synthpop that places more emphasis on a harder, more electronic sound, while synthpop is relatively closer to the post-punk and new wave "rock scene" in the 1980s.
